How do you get a kok to grow massive?

How do you get a kok to grow massive?

Well the answer is, you cant always get one to grow massive, there is a few factors involved.
First of all, your flowerhorn must have the right genetics to grow a massive kok.
If your fish doesn't have the genes, it doesn't matter what you do, its kok will not get massive.
In saying this though, there are a few things you can do to get your flowerhorn to the full potential it's genes allow.

Food:
Your fish, just like any other animal or human, must have the right foods to grow strong and healthy.
In the case of a flowerhorn, a variety of food that is high in protein is essential for its growth, health, and to increase kok size.
Quality foods like krill, shrimp, and bloodworms can help to enhance kok growth and it can also contribute to its color.

Personally, I use Humpy Head (for its kok) and Okiko Platinum (for its color) then I mix it with spirulina (for pearls) + VitaGold + fishoil. Then frozen bloodworms every week ( i prefer to feed BW in the morning)

Water quality:
A good water quality is really a big part on the growth of your fish. If you maintain the ideal water pH and water temperature, your fish will grow healthy and it can stay away from any disease.

Water changes:
I recommend doing 20-30% water changes weekly on adult tanks, or 30% twice a week on tanks with fry. And 60% every month.
Use an aged water (place a water in a large container and let it sit for few days, minimum is 24hrs) and aerate before doing water change.
Also add salt after each water change. (1/2 per 1 gallon)

Tank size:
If a fish is housed in a small tank, it will not reach it's full potential. A small tank will cause your fish to stop growing and become stunted. Which also means that its kok will not grow completely.

(See this link for the proper tank size for different types of flowehorn: http://flowerhorncareph.blogspot.com/2016/06/basic-flowerhorn-care.html)

Aggression:
This can also play a big part in kok growth. Usually flowerhorn will have a larger kok when they are dominant.
A few ways to make your fish more aggressive and feel more dominant are the following:
  • Play with your fish with a mirror for a few minutes each day, this make him feel like he is fighting a male, and each time you finish and take the mirror away, he feels like he has won the fight and chased the other male away. Therefore becoming the dominant fish in the area.
  • When feeding your fish, don't just throw the food in, tease them and play with them for a minute or two, make them chase your hand around and attack for there food. This is also another dominance based activity.
